The African continent represents a large, underutilized talent pool of motivated seafarers with strong loyalty and long-term career intentions. When properly selected, trained, and supported, seafarers from the region perform at the same professional standards as any global crew, often with higher retention. West African seafarers, particularly from Ghana, offer strong discipline, adaptability, and a proven work ethic. They are English-speaking, cost-efficient when boarded locally, and enhance crew diversity and inclusion. This translates into reduced turnover, lower recruitment costs, and a dependable workforce trained to international standards.
All seafarers are verified for STCW compliance and flag-state requirements. Beyond certification, we assess practical competence, communication ability, safety mindset, and onboard behaviour to ensure readiness before deployment. English is an official or widely spoken language in many West African countries. In addition, English communication skills are assessed during selection. Where needed, candidates receive targeted language and communication preparation focused on onboard operations, safety procedures, and reporting standards.
Cultural integration is addressed proactively through pre-joining orientation, clear behavioural expectations, and ongoing support during contracts. We emphasize respect for hierarchy, teamwork, and safety culture to ensure smooth integration.
The process includes:
These processes are aligned with STCW standards and BSM’s internal quality protocols.
There will be Pre-deployment training where seafarers complete STCW-compliant courses and vessel-specific familiarization. Cultural & Safety Orientations will also be conducted. After onboarding, performance monitoring and feedback will be conducted.
We identify talent early, starting from cadets and junior ranks, and provide structured development programs to guide them through clear career pathways. By investing in their growth from the outset, we build long-term loyalty and create a sustainable pipeline of skilled officers.
Yes. When provided with transparent contracts, structured career paths, and professional treatment, retention rates are consistently strong. Many seafarers from the region prefer stability over frequent job changes.
We remain actively involved throughout the contract. Performance concerns are addressed early through direct communication with both the vessel and the seafarer. If replacement is required, we manage the process professionally and efficiently.
Since 2012, BSM has successfully deployed West African cadets and officers across more than 150 vessels for 30 global clients, supported by structured training and career development programs. Our partnership with the Regional Maritime University and the establishment of MTC Ghana in 2024 have produced a high-quality talent pipeline, resulting in 780 promotions and 180 seafarers currently ready for advancement.
West African seafarers are ideally suited for vessels operating on routes that include West African ports and coastal trades, particularly in regions from Morocco to South Africa as there will be less additional expenses for crew changes or transportation from other regions.
At this stage, clients can select junior officers and cadets for deployment. We are actively developing a pipeline for higher ranks through structured career progression, ensuring future availability of senior officers from the region.
We manage documentation, certification verification, and coordination with relevant authorities in line with flag-state and company requirements. Transparency and compliance are core to our process.
Absolutely. Many partners begin with a limited number of placements to evaluate performance before scaling up. We encourage this approach as it builds confidence and long-term trust.
Yes. BSM can provide a detailed proposal and cost estimate tailored to your specific requirements, including vessel type, trade routes, and crew composition.
