As the maritime industry accelerates its transition towards alternative fuels, the ability to safely and efficiently operate next-generation vessel technologies has become increasingly important. The successful takeover of Maersk Torino, a methanol-fueled container vessel, demonstrates BSM's growing expertise in operating vessels designed for the future of sustainable shipping.
The adoption of renewable methanol as a marine fuel has the potential to reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 95%, making it a highly effective pathway toward achieving the industry's net-zero ambitions. As regulations such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime continue to reshape the shipping landscape, with the industry still awaiting clarity on the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework, methanol-fuelled dual-fuel vessels mark an important step towards maritime decarbonisation. The vessel's safety arrangements are governed by SOLAS requirements and the IMO International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), ensuring a robust framework for the safe operation of methanol-fueled ships.
Managing alternative-fuel vessels requires specialised technical competence, rigorous safety management and close coordination between onboard personnel and shore-based teams. As a fuel, Methanol offers several practical advantages over other alternative fuels. Being a liquid at ambient temperature and pressure, it eliminates the need for the complex cryogenic storage systems required for LNG, while also avoiding the extreme toxicity and handling challenges associated with ammonia. Furthermore, methanol is highly water-soluble and biodegradable. In the unlikely event of a spill, it disperses rapidly in seawater, posing substantially lower environmental risk than conventional oil-based fuels.
The addition of another methanol-fueled dual-fuel vessel to BSM's managed fleet further strengthens our position as a trusted ship management partner for the maritime energy transition. It reinforces our capability to safely manage advanced alternative-fuel vessels while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance, environmental stewardship and operational excellence.
The successful takeover of Maersk Torino was made possible through the dedication, professionalism and expertise of all teams involved. The collaborative efforts ensured a seamless progression in creating a strong foundation for the vessel's continued safe and efficient operation.
