The IMO approved following amendments to MARPOL Annex VI at MEPC 75 on the:

  • Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).
  • Carbon Intensity Indicator rating (CII).
  • Enhanced Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).

These amendments are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships and improve the energy efficiency of ships. These requirements will enter into force from 1 January 2023.

These amendments require ships to combine a technical and an operational approach to reduce their carbon intensity. The goal is to reduce the carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.
