As the maritime industry accelerates its transition towards alternative fuels, methanol has moved from concept to reality. BSM is already putting this transition into practice and actively operating in a methanol-fuelled future. With three Methanol Dual Fuel vessels under management and a fourth joining shortly, BSM is among the early operators translating futurefuel ambition into safe, compliant daytoday operations. A key enabler is crew readiness that meets flagstate requirements and operational demands from day one.

To support this, BSM’s Maritime Training Centres developed a bespoke Methanol Training Curriculum, now delivered at scale across BSM’s global Maritime Training Centre network. Since its launch, more than 180 seafarers have successfully completed BSM’s methanol training programme. Because this capability is fully developed and delivered inhouse, BSM can respond flexibly to operational needs and vessel takeovers.

Crew feedback confirms impact

Feedback from participants has been consistently strong, highlighting the programme’s relevance, depth, and practical value. Senior officers emphasised the clarity of instruction, the balance between theory and practice, and the confidence gained through realistic drills and simulations.

The training closes critical knowledge gaps and equips crews with the competence required to operate methanolfuelled vessels safely and effectively across ranks and functions.

A clear advantage for our clients

BSM’s early investment in curriculum design, instructor upskilling, advanced simulation, and live fire response training ensures our crews are among the best prepared globally for methanol operations.

For clients, this delivers tangible value:

  • Reduced operational and safety risk
  • Faster readiness for newbuilds and takeovers
  • Confidence in meeting flag, class, and charterer expectations

As BSM continues to expand its methanol training capacities, work is also well underway for additional future fuels training courses, e.g. for ammonia, building the foundation for safe, scalable alternativefuel operations.
