Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has become one of the single largest ship manager contributors to INTERTANKO’s GHG benchmarking tool.  Launched in November 2024, INTERTANKO’s GHG benchmarking tool has rapidly gained traction, with more than 870 ships already sharing vital DCS data from 2023 to 2025. BSM's contribution of more than 100 vessels, whose data are transmitted through the DNV’s Veracity Data Workbench API, bolsters this data pool, providing invaluable insights for the entire tanker sector. In total, around 415 ships are sharing data continuously through the Veracity by DNV interface, further enhancing the tool’s accuracy and live functionality.

BSM’s commitment to data transparency empowers INTERTANKO members to benchmark their fleet's performance against anonymised industry data, gaining crucial competitive advantages and ensuring regulatory compliance clarity. By utilising the same reporting formats required by key Recognized Organizations, BSM streamlines the data submission process, minimising administrative burdens and encouraging broader participation.

“We firmly believe that data sharing is essential for driving meaningful progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” stated Martin Mac Mahon, Environmental Compliance Manager at BSM. Anup Chechani, Manager of Performance and Decarbonization at BSM’s Fleet Performance Centre, added, “We are proud to be at the forefront of this initiative fostering a collaborative environment. By providing considerable but anonymised data, we are not only enhancing our clients’ operational efficiency but also contributing to the development of robust environmental regulations that will shape the future of our industry.”

The more stakeholders take the data sharing journey, the more the entire industry will benefit as it allows to see how well a single ship compares in a competitive market. BSM aims to lead by example and inspire others to join them on that journey.

INTERTANKO members can request access to the GHG Benchmarking Tool by logging into INTERTANKO.com.

With the GHG benchmarking tool, users can compare the rating and CO2 emissions of their own ships with the anonymised data of the industry and thus evaluate their competitiveness.

Decoding maritime decarbonisation regulations: complexity, challenges and solutions
Decoding maritime decarbonisation regulations: complexity, challenges and solutions

Global greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations in shipping share a common goal — decarbonisation. But the path is far from simple. Multiple databases, reporting standards and evolving requirements are placing increasing pressure on ship owners. This article addresses the latest regulatory developments, including MEPC 83, the top three challenges for owners and how BSM is supporting clients every step of the way.

Demystifying ammonia as a marine fuel
Demystifying ammonia as a marine fuel

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our sector’s ambitious target is by 2030 to reduce shipping’s carbon emissions by 40% from 2008 levels. Urgent action must be taken to meet these new goals. Ammonia is the only “carbon-free” marine fuel on the horizon, but there is considerable scepticism across the marine sector about the actual feasibility to use this product as fuel. BSM has considerable experience in handling bulk ammonia cargo, so we took the initiative to arrange a focussed one-day seminar to address and discuss these concerns.

What was once a traditional, manual-driven sector is now leveraging cutting-edge technologies, optimising routes, improving fleet management, and ensuring real-time tracking like never before. One of the companies that has been involved in this turn of times is MariApps Marine Solutions.

BSM expands its maritime training opportunities in India
BSM expands its maritime training opportunities in India

India is a key player in the global seafarer market, meeting the growing demand for skilled maritime professionals. To support this development, BSM is investing in high-quality certified training opportunities. At the beginning of the year, the new BSM Training Foundation, located in Kochi, has been launched. It is a Directorate General (DG) approved STCW training centre complying with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
