In the fast-evolving world of shipping, software solutions and digital tools are the game-changers that are driving efficiency and innovation. From route optimisation to real-time tracking, these technologies streamline operations, cut costs, and enhance safety on the high seas. “Embracing digital transformation is no longer optional - it’s the key to staying competitive and navigating the future of maritime trade,” says Sankar Ragavan, CEO of MariApps Marine Solutions.

These are not empty words coming from Ragavan, as his company has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Since its inception in 2014, MariApps has been at the forefront of driving digital transformation within the shipping sector, offering a comprehensive suite of management software products that streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and improve overall vessel performance. With a focus on innovation, the company has developed software solutions that address a wide range of challenges faced by shipowners and operators.

“From humble beginnings with a team of 100 and a handful of clients, MariApps grew into a global force of over 1,300 dedicated professionals, spanning over nine strategic locations,” tells Ragavan about the beginnings of the enterprise. Initially focused on addressing complex operational challenges, the company expanded its portfolio to include a range of innovative digital tools. With a presence across several countries, including Germany, Singapore, India, Dubai, Cyprus, USA, Japan, France, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, MariApps rapidly became a trusted partner for ship owners and operators. As the company's customer base grew steadily, so did the range of products and solutions on offer, from their flagship suite of digital solutions, smartPAL, to value-added products such as LiveFleet and several mobile applications.

Over the years, the company has consistently focused on pioneering technology to streamline maritime operations, integrating artificial intelligence and business intelligence, and shaping the future of maritime efficiency and safety. MariApps’ AI-focused subsidiary, OceanAI, launched in 2024. Their AI-driven solutions support clients in achieving operational excellence by optimising performance and improving decision-making with artificial intelligence integration.

Today, products offered by MariApps cover everything from predictive maintenance and real-time data analytics to intelligent automation, enabling smarter, safer, and more sustainable maritime operations. The company’s commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction has earned it the trust of some of the world’s leading shipping companies.

As MariApps looks toward the future, the company remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of maritime technology, with an ongoing focus on innovation, sustainability, and digital solutions that continue to shape the future of global shipping: “2025 promises to be another year of exciting growth and innovation for MariApps. We are committed to continuing to develop cutting-edge solutions that address the evolving needs of the maritime industry and empower our clients to navigate the future with confidence,” envisions Ragavan.

Decoding maritime decarbonisation regulations: complexity, challenges and solutions

Global greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations in shipping share a common goal — decarbonisation. But the path is far from simple. Multiple databases, reporting standards and evolving requirements are placing increasing pressure on ship owners. This article addresses the latest regulatory developments, including MEPC 83, the top three challenges for owners and how BSM is supporting clients every step of the way.

Demystifying ammonia as a marine fuel
Demystifying ammonia as a marine fuel

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our sector’s ambitious target is by 2030 to reduce shipping’s carbon emissions by 40% from 2008 levels. Urgent action must be taken to meet these new goals. Ammonia is the only “carbon-free” marine fuel on the horizon, but there is considerable scepticism across the marine sector about the actual feasibility to use this product as fuel. BSM has considerable experience in handling bulk ammonia cargo, so we took the initiative to arrange a focussed one-day seminar to address and discuss these concerns.

To support this development, BSM is investing in high-quality certified training opportunities. At the beginning of the year, the new BSM Training Foundation, located in Kochi, has been launched. It is a Directorate General (DG) approved STCW training centre complying with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
