Our series ‘Crew Spotlight’ aims at showcasing all ranks of our seagoing colleagues and their journey with BSM. This series provides a glimpse into their life at sea and beyond, challenges faced and personal stories from their maritime journey. In this edition, we highlight the journey of Captain Liu Jinhui, whose leadership is anchored in one core principle: safety without compromise.

Meet Captain Liu Jinhui, a tanker captain with BSM, who has spent 19 years at sea ensuring the safe transport of global energy. For Captain Liu, safety is not just a requirement, it is a mindset embedded in every decision, every routine, and every action onboard.

Safety without Compromise

“Safety is a mindset embedded in every decision.”

Captain Liu Jinhui, a master with BSM, has spent 19 years at sea, distinguished by professionalism, responsibility, and leadership.

SAFETY AS A MINDSET

Throughout my career as a seafarer, safety has been my constant compass. On oil tankers, often described as floating hazardous material depots, there is no room for compromise. I firmly believe that true excellence at sea lies not in reacting to emergencies, but in building a culture where incidents are prevented altogether.

One of the most defining experiences in my career was during a voyage to the United States, where we faced inspections by both the US Coast Guard and BP, known for setting the highest benchmarks in the industry. From the moment we set course, preparation became our priority.

We broke down every checklist into daily actions, tested equipment repeatedly, and conducted intensive drills. We even challenged each other by simulating the toughest inspection questions. When the inspectors boarded, they saw a confident crew, well-maintained systems, and clear documentation – and we passed with zero deficiencies!

This achievement was not luck. It was the result of discipline, teamwork, and a mindset where safety procedures become second nature.

Equally important is how we respond when things go wrong. During one cargo operation, a suction failure halted discharge. By activating contingency plans and using alternative systems, we completed the operation safely and in full compliance. In such moments, the captain’s responsibility is clear: to make the safest and most compliant decision under pressure.

A JOURNEY OF GROWTH

My journey began 19 years ago as the only Chinese crew member onboard my first vessel. Language was my biggest initial challenge, but I turned every difficulty into a learning opportunity. Through persistence and dedication, I grew within an international environment that shaped my professional outlook.

A key influence in my development was an Indian captain who mentored me across six vessels, starting from Third Officer. One lesson he taught me has stayed with me throughout my career: every calculation, every decision must be made with absolute confidence. As captain, you are the final line of defence.

Working in multicultural teams has also shaped my leadership style. I believe in being strict on work but empathetic toward people. Rather than simply giving answers, I encourage younger seafarers to think independently and develop their own understanding. This builds confidence, resilience, and long-term capability.

I have also learned that trust comes not from authority alone, but from professionalism, fairness, and respect. Whether resolving conflicts or managing daily operations, my focus is always on solutions and teamwork.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE

Looking back, what I value most is the journey of growth – from a young cadet navigating language barriers to becoming a captain responsible for vessel, crew, cargo, and environment. Every challenge has strengthened my skills and reinforced my commitment to safety and professionalism.

Working with colleagues from diverse cultures has been especially rewarding. It has taught me tolerance, adaptability, and the importance of clear communication – qualities essential for safe and efficient operations at sea.

TIME ON SHORE

Time ashore offers a chance to reflect, recharge, and prepare for the next voyage. It is also a time to stay updated with industry developments, particularly in areas such as digitalisation and decarbonisation, which are shaping the future of shipping.

I see technologies like big data and AI as tools that support decision-making, but the captain’s judgment and responsibility remain irreplaceable. Continuous learning is essential to stay prepared for what lies ahead.

LOOKING AHEAD & ADVICE
For the next generation of seafarers, my advice is simple:
Do simple things exceptionally well. Consistency in everyday tasks builds excellence over time.
Embrace challenges. Difficult environments accelerate learning and shape your character.
Prioritise safety above all. It is the foundation of everything we do.

A message from our CEO

At BSM, safety is our top priority and our number one strategic goal. The safety of our crew and the vessels entrusted to us underpins everything we do as a ship manager. In his video message, our CEO Sebastian von Hardenberg says what our focus on safe operations means in practice, for all of us. Because whether we are at sea or on shore, we all work towards that same goal.
