BSM MARITIME TRAINING CENTRE
FOR ADVANCED LEARNING (INDIA)

In-house training commenced in Mumbai in March 2000 and the BSM Maritime Training Centre for Advance Learning (India), (MTCAL) started operations in October 2004 under the name of the Eurasia Centre for Advanced Learning to cater to the growing demand for well-trained staff.

Vision

The vision of MTCAL is to improve the efficiency and the quality of service rendered by the company through consistent focus on growth and development, instilling leadership qualities and building a team of proactive professionals.

Mission

The MTCAL's mission is to provide a centre of excellence that caters to all training and education of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement’s staff, both onshore and onboard.

The objectives are to:

  • provide needs-based training to improve skills.
  • improve compliance with international and national legislation/regulations.
  • instill commercial awareness in ship’s onboard crew.
  • develop a positive, proactive work ethic and improve personnel management at all levels.
  • enhance employee skills and capabilities for successfully managing higher responsibilities both ashore and onboard.

A full 180° Bridge Simulator and a full Engine Room Simulator were installed and additional faculty staff were hired. New simulator-based and classroom-based courses were added to the range of services offered.

MTCAL currently offers following courses for seafarers and shore staff as applicable.

Simulator-based courses:

  • ECDIS course for Nautical Officers (2 days).
  • bridge team management (BTM) (3 days).
  • engine room team management (ETM) (3 days).
  • engineering knowledge for Deck Officers (1 day).
  • large ship handling (2 days).
  • large ship maneuvering and anchoring techniques (5 days).

Non-simulator-based courses:

  • ISPS familiarisation (1 day).
  • integrated ship management solutions (ISMS) (2 days).
  • marine resource management course under license from The Swedish Club (3 days).
  • port state control (2 days).
  • pollution prevention (1 day).
  • ISO 14001 (1 day).
  • safe working practices (1 day).
  • surveys and vetting (2 days).

The following courses are outsourced to other institutes as the demand is sporadic in some cases and in others flag state approvals are required:

  • Ship Security Officer (SSO) (3 days).
  • hazmat course (1 day).
  • turbocharger course.
  • practical marine electrical course.
  • leadership development programme (2 days).

The leadership development programme is conducted as a seminar to which both seafarers and shore staff are invited. The values of trust, loyalty, integrity and professionalism are instilled in participants. The seminar guides participants in the techniques of better motivating themselves and their team and in turn achieving self-fulfillment through rising to their maximum potential and rendering better services. This has so far been scheduled as an annual training event and was most recently conducted in April 2006.

A full LNG simulator was installed in June 2006 and a SIGTTO complaint management level course has since been developed. This course has been conducted in-house to validate the contents.

A seminar room with video-conferencing facilities was added in 2006. This is used for both in-house and outsourced training courses and seminars. A well-equipped and constantly developing library with books, videos, CDs, manuals and accident reports is available to seafarers and shore staff.

Safety seminars

To enhance safety in Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement and to improve the dissemination of information to seafarers, safety seminars were initiated in 2006.

Onboard training

The video-on-demand from Videotel has been recently contracted for all vessels under Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement’s technical management. Vessels have received and are operating this fully functional VOD system; a few vessels have reported some system teething problems which are being attended to. The bulk carriers and container vessels will be next.

MTCAL issues a schedule for onboard training based on vessel type. Additionally, the rank-specific training that each officer would need to undergo for eligibility for further promotion is prescribed. A detailed record of onboard training is maintained at BMCI.

Recruitment and training of deck cadets and trainee engineers

Besides the training courses, the Centre also looks after the selection and training of all deck cadets and trainee engineers. To supplement the supply of seafarers to our fleet the onboard training slots are consistently being increased and to keep up with the additional requirements, recruitment activities were further stepped up in 2007.

Quality certification

Keeping in view that MTCAL intends to extend its services to third-party clients, the Centre has obtained certification to ISO 9001:2000 from Lloyd’s Register. To further improve the quality level of individual courses, MTCAL is currently working on having selected courses accredited at course level by Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
