Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (Isle of Man) Ltd., formerly Dorchester Atlantic - Marine Limited (DAML), is a shipmanagement company located in Douglas, Isle of Man and is primarily involved in the management of a wide range of vessels, including specialized types such as gas carriers and self-unloading bulk carriers. Design and Newbuilding Consultancy is also an integral - and expanding - part of the company's business.

Our company’s mission is to constantly reinforce Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement’s outstanding global reputation by constantly working to improve our excellent performance as a Service Delivery Centre and shipmanager by providing a consistently improving quality of operation and applying the highest regard for safety, security and protection of the environment to all vessels under our control, irrespective of type or ownership.

Our company provides a variety of services tailored to individual clients’ needs, including:

  • Commercial Management
  • Crew Management
  • Cryogenic Consultancy
  • Gas and Chemical Emergency Response
  • Gas and Chemical Training
  • Newbuilding Supervision
  • Plan Approval
  • Project Management
  • Technical Management

Our flat management structure ensures that we are able to react quickly to the ever-changing conditions within the shipping industry and are able to implement new legislation as efficiently as possible.

The company’s technical management philosophy is to have Superintendents dedicated to individual clients, working in teams with Purchasing and Administration Officers and supported by specialist managers in naval architecture, cryogenics, electrical, instrumentation and marine disciplines.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (Isle of Man) Ltd. is unique in having the capability to carry out gas training at all levels as well as being authorised to issue gas endorsements on behalf of flag states (Liberia, Bahamas & Isle of Man). This industry-leading ability allows us to carry out training in any location, including onboard vessels. As part of overall project management, we are able to provide the full range of theoretical and practical gas-carrier training courses. The company also delivers bespoke courses for in-house management purposes, as well as providing management and emergency courses for our LNG clients and suppliers (classification societies, flag states and the U.S. Coast Guard).

As large gas carriers have special manoeuvring characteristics, we have sponsored the construction of an 11-ton ‘ride-on’ scale model of a 140,000 cbm type LNGC at the Ilawa Facility in Poland, the ‘Dorchester Lady’. The model can be customised to reproduce the handling characteristics of single-screw, dual-screw and azipod propulsion. The course is designed for Senior Deck Officers but is also highly beneficial for terminal-based Pilots.

At Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (Isle of Man) Ltd. we pride ourselves on a very high officer retention rate. Moreover, the company's continuous investment in cadet schemes and training at all levels means a highly qualified, experienced and motivated pool of officers is consistently available to our clients.

Our company is an active member of SIGTTO (Society of International Gas Tankers and Terminal Operators) which involves membership of SIGTTO GPC, the chairmanship of the SIGTTO Panel and membership of SIGTTO Working Groups, most recently on LNG crew training standards, application of vetting to LNG ships and ESD systems for LNG/Cs. Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (Isle of Man) Ltd. has also been a regularly contributing participant at GasTech, RINA, IMarEST and other LNG-specific conferences.

Managing Director David Furnival is the Chairman of the Isle of Man Shipping Association and as such has a close relationship with this flag state and all companies involved in the management of vessels registered on the Isle of Man.
